What is the point of flash fiction?

Okay, so it’s hard to write, and it’s quite popular online, in journals, and various other areas, like free weeklies and whatnot.  Flash fiction can be funny, detailed, or completely vague and confusing, but is it entertaining?  How about this:  What the hell is the market?  Nobody buys this crap, yet “contests” are everywhere, including Esquire, which will probably receive about a million submissions, via emailed cocktail napkin, toilet paper, and Home Depot receipt.

How is it that there is a market for contests, when there is no market for consumption (of the product)?  Perhaps I’m an idiot; after all, who the hell buys poetry?

This is from the perspective of someone who won a flash fiction contest some years ago…
